Rod Whitley

My name is Rod Whitley and I am currently a theatre arts teacher for Dallas Independent School District. I’m originally from Natchez, Mississippi where I was the first African-American musical director for the Natchez Little Theatre. There, I oversaw the music production of many musicals such as “Anne, Legally Blonde, and The Color Purple”. I also have acted in many musicals as well. (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Coat, A Natchez Christmas Carol) I left Natchez once I received a Dean’s Fellowship to study Musical Theatre Writing at Tisch School of the Art at NYU. Upon graduation, I journeyed to Texas and began teaching theatre K-5. I am currently working on new musicals ranging in genres from children’s to alternative.

I have a Master’s degree in Musical Theatre Writing from Tisch School of the Arts (NYU) where we focused on libretto writing and music composition and a Bachelor’s in Music Education with an emphasis on voice from Alcorn State University where I served as accompanist for the Alcorn State Men’s Chorale.
